History of multihead weighing

R_Series multihead weigher in motion

The multihead weigher was first brought to market by Ishida, back in the early 1970s.

Check out some of the key steps in its development by simply clicking on the year that interests you, or simply scroll through the history year by year (below).

1968 The problematic peppers of Shikoku

The wide variation in size of green peppers makes accurate manual packing very difficult. Growers on a Japanese island take the challenge to an engineering company with a long track record of innovation in weights & measures: Ishida.

1972 Launch of the very first multihead weigher

Ishida, respond with four years of development and testing, leading to the launch of the ACW-M-1. Its speed and accuracy far surpass even the most skilled of manual packers. Giveaway is sharply cut.

1978 An ideal answer for snacks

Snacks, with their high value and relatively uncomplicated flow characteristics seem an ideal application for the new technology, and Ishida launches the first multihead weigher for snacks.

1980 Arrival of the Ishida multihead weigher load cell

Ishida makes a leap forward with new accuracy and speed delivered by load cells specially designed for multihead weighing.

1981-84 Integration of the weigher into factory systems

Ishida introduces remote control units that improve operation and co-ordination of the packing line, and for the first time integrates weighers into overall factory automation. Contact parts (hoppers and feeders) are now designed to be lifted off and replaced by hand, for easy cleaning.

1988 A new level of accuracy in making up mixtures

Four separate ingredients can be mixed into one pack with the greatest accuracy thanks to a new multihead weigher from Ishida. Noisy pneumatic hopper opening and closing mechanisms are replaced by a quieter, more controlled approach, using stepper motors.

1990 A new milestone in weighing accuracy

A further blow against giveaway is struck as Ishida load cell development takes accuracy to 0.01g.

1993 Reliable weighing in shaky circumstances

A new way of increasing accuracy at speed, by measuring and compensating for ambient vibration, is introduced with the Ishida DZ series. In addition to this Anti Floor Vibration facility, Ishida also brings in Digital Signal Processing and Digital Filtration. The new technology adds a special edge in high-speed applications such as confectionery and snacks.

1996 Refining hopper action

Springs and linkages, which collect dust and are liable to wear, are greatly reduced. Needle bearings within the drive mechanisms aid more smoothly controlled hopper gate motion.

1999 Seamless weighing and bagging

The high-speed packing of snacks benefits from the arrival of the first fully integrated bagmaker and multihead from a single supplier, offering significant advances in line efficiency and productivity. The Ishida iTPS is an instant success.

2000-01 Enterprise-wide integration

Ishida weighers now link with local or wide area networks using Ethernet functionality, with windows-based user interfaces widely available. Data sharing, software updating and remote control become much simpler.

2003 Smooth running in sticky situations

Ishida’s new Fresh Food Weigher combines the automation, accuracy and speed of multihead weighing with the best use of operator intervention to open up new possibilities for weighing fresh meat and poultry and fresh produce.

2005 Ishida keeps its edge with new calculation technology

Ishida introduces the field–programmable gate array to the task of calculating weight combinations. Many more calculations are made, in one fifth the time previously taken, leaving time over for more checking and so increasing reliability and accuracy.

For many manufacturers, the result is lower SD (standard deviation) and higher yields of packed product, leading to increased profitability.

2007 A leap forward in snack packing efficiency

Two new, advanced versions of the Ishida Total Packaging System (iTPS) are launched. A ‘twin tube’ (one weigher, two bagmakers) system for crisps and corn snacks, and a ‘single tube’ (one ultra-fast weigher and one bagmaker) system for faster-flowing snack-foods.

2008 Hatching something entirely new in fresh poultry packing

Ishida combines its new Screw Feeder Weigher (which uses the Archimedes screw principle to move very sticky products) with an ergonomically designed workspace in which each operator receives a timely and interactive supply of accurately weighed tray contents for styling. The resulting speed and efficiency revolutionizes a sector previously dominated by slow and inaccurate grading methods.
