Mind the skills gap

There’s never been a better time to be an apprentice.

In the last academic year more than half a million young people enrolled into apprenticeship schemes, choosing to learn subjects covering everthing from administration to engineering. And it’s the latter that’s of particular interest to us at Ishida.

It’s estimated that the engineering sector needs to find new engineers each year for the next 5 years to fill the skills gap, and that’s based on some startling statistics.

For example, more than a third of engineering companies said they had to delay the introduction of new products and services, as they just didn’t have access to the right skills to get their R&D projects over the line.

And so, in line with our corporate philosophy of the Three Way Harmony – good for our customers, good for society and good for our  company – our apprenticeship programme was established in 2011.

But with nearly half of all businesses employing apprentices, why do aspiring engineers choose Ishida?

Success breeds success, and our apprentices are no stranger to it. In fact, Ishida’s trainees have swept the board for the last three years in the EEF  Apprentice of the Year Awards – most recently Emily James, who progressed to the national final after winning the Midlands heat and came out on top to take the main prize!

She followed in the footsteps of two previous regional winners  and the current cohort are determined to keep this winning streak alive.

Interested in joining our apprenticeship scheme?

We offer places to the most promising and passionate of applicants. Each apprentice embarks on a bespoke programme tailored to their strengths and development needs and, while it’s a demanding programme, it’s balanced with continuous nurturing and support from the entire Ishida workforce.

And when it’s all over, it’s not over – all of our graduating apprentices to date have transitioned into full-time roles at Ishida, in a specialist discipline of their preference.

To an Ishida apprentice, success means a secure future – but with all the possibilities that working with a global market leader can bring.

If you think you’re made of the right stuff, applications for our September 2018 intake will be opening soon. Look out for our next blog full of tips to make your application sing, or contact simon.cutler@ishidaeurope.com for an informal chat about our award-winning apprenticeship scheme.
