Case in Point: Maple Leaf Foods, Canada 

Canada’s Maple Leaf Foods is one of a number of meat and poultry producers to have realised such benefits in partnering with Ishida. Recognising the need for fast and reliable processing, they opted to integrate a combination of Ishida Flex Graders, Robotgraders and inspection systems at their new plant in London, Ontario. This has allowed for the cut up of and packaging of components from the 27,500 birds processed every hour. Maple Leaf Foods has been able to deliver around 270,000 trays per day across 16 grading and packing lines. 

The investment decision was based on Ishida’s proven experience and success in the delivery of poultry packaging solutions. It proved a sound one, with Maple Leaf’s Taimur Aslam saying, “I have never experienced this level of collaboration from a company throughout such a huge flagship project. With Ishida I have enjoyed one of the best working relationships, a true partnership where we co-operated fully and at the same time challenged each other at every stage. This made it easy for us to push the boundaries of what we could achieve.” 

One of the main aims in the integration of Ishida’s technologies was to automate a previously labour-intensive process for greater speed and efficiency. This has been achieved, with the Ishida equipment allowing for the simultaneous handling of various product types and packaging formats. The Ishida systems have also proven easy to integrate with Maple Leaf’s other equipment. Maple Leaf Foods are now able to grade and pack whole legs at 120 pieces per minute, with thighs and drums at up to 400 pieces per minute.
