Apprenticeship Award success for Ishida Europe’s next generation of engineers

24 Jan 2023

A trio of Ishida Europe apprentices have hit the headlines recently for the way they are training and delivering a positive impact to UK manufacturing.

Miles Warren, who has been an Assembly Technician with us for three years and is in his fourth and final year of the scheme, won the Engineering Apprentice: Rising Star title in the Make UK Midlands and East Regional Awards, impressing judges with the way he is progressing in his career, whilst also helping to implement operational efficiency improvements on our production line.

He was joined on stage by Manufacturing Engineer Matthew Holmes (runner-up in the Engineering Apprentice category) and Design Engineer Lauren Darby, who was also shortlisted.

National Bid

Miles’ success meant that the 19-year-old was invited to compete for the national honour, travelling to London with his parents, our Managing Director Dave Tiso and Claire Dewhurst, our Talent & Resource Manager.

Miles’ outstanding contribution was recognised by being named as overall runner-up at the event, which recognises industry and the apprentices who have done exceptional work in their sector, celebrating their commitment, dedication and resilience.

Claire Dewhurst commented: “Growing our own staff is so important to our business, especially with the ongoing labour shortage that the sector is experiencing.”

“That’s why we are so committed to our Apprenticeship programme and it’s great to see it reaping dividends with Miles, Matthew and Lauren being recognised by one of the most prestigious engineering competitions in the country.”

Miles commented: “An apprenticeship with Ishida has given me countless opportunities from the very start to develop my knowledge and skill-set, both academically and practically, far beyond my expectations. After recently celebrating becoming National Runner up for an Apprentice of the Year award, I know Ishida is a supportive employer with a great apprenticeship programme. I am more confident and mature since starting and I look forward to the exciting opportunities that await me once I complete my apprenticeship later this year.”

Ishida Europe, which designs and manufactures weighing, x-ray inspection, check weighing, tray sealing and leak detection machines, is a long-term supporter of Make UK, the organisation committing to helping UK manufacturers and engineers to evolve, innovate, compete and grow.
